Great Leap Forward campaign was initiated by Mao Zedong in China in 1958 in order to industrialise the country on a large scale. People were encouraged to set up industries in their backyards. However , the GLF campaign faced a major setback as 3 million people lost their lives due to a drought.Also,when Russia had problems with China, it withdrew its professionals who were sent to China to help in the industrialisation process

Commune system was started in China . Under this system,people practiced farming together. By 1958,there were approximately 26000 communes covering the entire country.
