Onam is the official state festival of Kerala since 1960. It is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by Malayalees regardless of religion,caste and creed. According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. The celebration of Onam starts from the first of Malayalam New year which continues for ten days. On the occasion of Onam, the state government declares public holiday which starts from 'Uthradom' i,e., Onam eve in Kerala.
