, when viewing the movies you should look for two things:

The progression in hardware representation of a bit of data:

Vacuum Tubes (1950s) - one bit on the size of a thumb;

Transistors (1950s and 1960s) - one bit on the size of a fingernail;

Integrated Circuits (1960s and 70s) - thousands of bits on the size of a hand

Silicon computer chips (1970s and on) - millions of bits on the size of a finger nail.

The progression of the ease of use of computers:

Almost impossible to use except by very patient geniuses (1950s);

Programmable by highly trained people only (1960s and 1970s);

Useable by just about anyone (1980s and on).

to see how computers got smaller, cheaper, and easier to use.

Answer:

The first ever computer was invented in the 1820s by Charlse Babbage. However the first electronic digital computer were developed between 1940 and 1945 in the United States and in the United Kingdom.

They were gigantic, originally the size of a large room, and also need to be supply a large amount of power source which is equivalent as several hundred modern personal computers.

The history of computer hardware covers the developments from simple devices to aid calculation, to mechanical calculators, punched card data processing and on to modern stored program computers. The tools or mechanical tool used to help in calculation are called calculators while the machine operator that help in calculations is called computer.

At first the aids of computation were purely mechanical devices which required the person to set up initial values of an elementary arithmetic operation, then he will have to manipulate the device to obtain the result. Analog computers, which could represented the number in the form of digits,automatically manipulated by mechanical mechanism. In 1946 the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator (ENIAC) was pioneered by two scientist from University of Pennsylvania, John Mauchly and J.Presper Eckert. Which used a vacuum tubes.

They were inspired by the idea of bush differential analyzer that is why the ENIAC was called the descendant of Dr Bush’s machine. However their inventions are far more ambitious, it contained nearly 18000 vacuum tubes.

First electronic digital computer was built by Dr. John V. Atanasoff and

Clifford Berry. It was called the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC). In

1943 an electronic computer name the Colossus was built for the

military. Other developments continued until in 1946 the first general–

purpose digital computer, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and

Computer (ENIAC) was built. It is said that this computer weighed 30

tons, and had 18,000 vacuum tubes which was used for processing. When

this computer was turned on for the first time lights dim in sections of

Philadelphia.
