Rhodophyta:- They are red algae and are also known as ancient algae (second ancient algae).

Examples:- Delesseria, Chondrus, Coralline algae etc.

Some features of rhodophyta are as follows:-

  • They are multicellular.
  • They are present in marine water mainly.
  • They do not have cilia.
  • Also flagella is not found in them.
  • Cell wall is present in them which is made up of cellulose and pectin mainly.
  • In some cell wall is made up of calcium carbonate.
  • Presence of calcium carbonate cell wall helps them in the formation of coral reefs and lime stone like Lithothamnion.
  • Food is present in the form of Floridean starch.
  • Reproduction may be sexual or asexual.
  • Gamets are non motile in case of sexual reproduction.
