Rhodophyta:- They are red algae and are also known as ancient algae (second ancient algae).
Examples:- Delesseria, Chondrus, Coralline algae etc.
Some features of rhodophyta are as follows:-
- They are multicellular.
- They are present in marine water mainly.
- They do not have cilia.
- Also flagella is not found in them.
- Cell wall is present in them which is made up of cellulose and pectin mainly.
- In some cell wall is made up of calcium carbonate.
- Presence of calcium carbonate cell wall helps them in the formation of coral reefs and lime stone like Lithothamnion.
- Food is present in the form of Floridean starch.
- Reproduction may be sexual or asexual.
- Gamets are non motile in case of sexual reproduction.
