• The city was looted twice by the Maratha king Shivaji, with the first sacking occurring in 1664.

• Later, Surat became the emporium of India, exporting gold and cloth.
• One of the important ancient centres of the textile industry was Madurai.
• The pearl trade centre was Korkai.
• Industrial activity flourished in Madurai.
• Goods like pepper, pearls, ivory, textiles, gold ornaments, etc., were exported from Tamilnadu.
