New Mexico is traversed by two transcontinental lines, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, from Chicago to San Francisco and the Southern Pacific, from New Orleans to San Francisco. Two transcontinental railway systems, the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe, were built across Arizona in 1878-1883.

Trans-continental Railways are long routed railways lines which are across the entire continent or country from all directions either from east to west or north to south they are called transcontinental railways or railroad.

Some of the examples of transcontinental railways are :

  • Trans-Siberian Railway : This is the longest railway network in the world.It connects Asia ,Europe and mainly it connects St.Petersburg to Vladivostok.This Railway lies in Russia with a total distance of 7621 km.
  • Trans-Canadian Railway:This Railway network connects three places Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Calgary which runs from Halifax in the east and Vancouver on the Pacific coast.Total distance of this railway route is 4,446 km.It was started in the year 1886.
  • Australian Trans-continental Railway:It connects Perth and Sydney which runs from southern part of Australia.Its major part lies in desert areas The distance of this railway route is 1693 km.
