It shares its borders with three states – Assam, Nagaland, and Mizoram. Apart from that Myanmmar lies to the east of Manipur and this international border stretches up to 398 kilometers.
Jawaharlal Nehru referred to Manipur as the Jewel of India. Due to its proximity to the border of India, it was invaded by Burmese more often. After the Yandaboo Treaty, Manipur became the important part of India during the British Raj as this treaty marked an end to the Indo-Burma War and established dominance of Brits. Japanese also used Manipur as an entry gate during the WWII but were defeated near Imphal.
