red and yellow soil: high iron content needs Fertilizer and irrigation to grow crops it is found in the eastern and Southern parts of Deccan Plateau
laterite soil: poor quality and founded in the fringes of the Western Ghats Chota Nagpur Plateau and highlands Assam and Meghalaya
arid soil: it can be also referred as desert soil coarse grained dry and Sandy it is found in the arid region of Rajasthan and joining arid areas of Gujarat Punjab and Haryana

1) Red and Yellow soil
- It is red in colour due to the presence of ferric oxide. It becomes yellow as goes deep down into the soil.
- 19% area of India is covered with red soil.
- Soil is spread from Tamilnadu in peninsular India up to Bundelkhand in North.
- It doesn't contain lime, gravel and carbonate.
- Crops like millet, cotton, wheat, linseed are grown in this soil.
2) Laterite soil
- The name Laterite soil is derived from latin word 'later' which means 'a brick'.
- It is red in colour due to iron oxide in it.
- When this soil become wet it becomes smooth like butter and when It gets dry it becomes hard.
- This soil is found in higher area of peninsular plateau.
- Soil contains more iron, potash and aluminum.
- Crops like cotton, paddy, ragi, tea can be grown.
3) Arid soil ( Desert soil )
- It is sandy and infertile soil.
- It contain more dissolved minerals and lacks of organic matter.
- Soil found in Rajasthan, Haryana,and southern Punjab.
- Crops like millet and jowar can be grown if proper irrigation facilities are provided.
- It is mostly found in Arid and semi-arid region hence known as Arid soil.
4) Forest soil
- Surface of forest land is covered with shaded leaves of trees. These leaves decay and forms humus which make upper part of forest soil black.
- While going down it become blue or red in colour.
- It is found in the altitude between 3000 m to 3100m.
- This soil found in forests of Himalayas.
- Tea, coffee, spices and Crops like wheat, maize, paddy can be grown.
5) Black soil
- Lava rocks and climate played an important role in the formation of black soil.
- This soil is very fertile.
- It has good capacity of retaining moisture.
- Black soil or regur soil covers 15% of total area of India.
- It contains iron, lime, calcium, potash, etc.
- Crops like cotton, mustard, groundnut can be grown.
- It is mostly suitable for cultivating cotton and hence also known as cotton soil.
6) Alluvial soil
- It is formed due to alluvium that the rivers deposit along their banks.
- 43% of area of India is under this soil.
- This soil found in plains of Brahmaputra, sataluj, in delta region of Mahanadi, Godavari.
- Soil contains potash, limestone.
- Crops like wheat, paddy, sugarcane, cotton etc. can be grown in Alluvial soil.
