write some points on Clayton from the chapter The inexperienced Ghost

The Story of the Inexperienced Ghost” by H.G. Wells is best described as a tale within a tale. On the surface level, it is an excellent ghost story that has just that little nagging sense of creepiness to get even the most ardent of sceptics. Underneath this, though, the story has an interesting metaphor for ghosts and people. As per usual, the following is my own interpretation of the piece and just an opinion.
“The Story of the Inexperienced Ghost” is told by a narrator relating the last story told by their friend Clayton. In Clayton’s story, he runs into a ghost one night while he is rather drunk and alone at the Mermaid Club. The ghost, upon spotting Clayton, attempts to scare him by shouting “Boo.” Drunk and unfazed though, Clayton brushes the ghost aside before dragging the ghost back to his room to learn more. As Clayton spends time with the ghost, he is struck by how weak the ghost is. Feeling sympathy for the ghost’s pathetic nature, Clayton tries to encourage the ghost and helps the ghost with some “passes.” While Clayton is distracted for a moment, the ghost succeeds and disappears suddenly. The narrator and friends meet Clayton’s story with a mix of skepticism and caution. After being dared, Clayton attempts the complete the same “passes” as the ghost. He succeeds, at which point he freezes and falls down dead to his friends’ horror. The narrator ends the story not knowing what to make of the matter.
