Macrophages are specialised cells involved in the detection, phagocytosis and destruction of bacteria and other harmful organisms. In addition, they can also present antigens to T cells and initiate inflammation by releasing molecules (known as cytokines) that activate other cells.

Some points on macrophages are as follows:-

1. They are found in kidney or bean structurally.

2. In shape it is found to be amoeboid.

3. In them amount of cytoplasm is high.

4. Cytoplasmic is found to be agranular.

5. Amount of lysosome is high since it looks like granular.

6. They have capability of destroying all types of viruses and bacteria as they are having high amount of lysosomes.

7. Lysosomes work in them by the process of phagocytosis hence they are naturally phagocytic.

8. They play important role in destroying of damaged and dead cells hence they are known as scavenger cells inorder to clean the cells properly.
