When water freezes, it expands because ice at 0 deg.C is less dense than water at that temperature. It’s a common event in cold regions. Above freezing, liquid water fills the pipes. As night falls, pipes can become colder than freezing and since the pipes are closed off, the expanding ice bursts the pipes. Next day, the ice thaws and the pipes now leak water into your basement, for example. The problem can be prevented by wrapping the coldest part of the water pipe as it enters your home, or letting the faucet(s) drip overnight, so that pressure can’t build up and the constant flow helps prevent build up of ice in the pipe. Of course, doing both is good, too.
