♪ Homogeneous Equilibrium : If the participating substances are in the same phase, the equilibrium is said to be homogeneous .

Examples of Homogeneous Equilibrium are :-

1) Thermal decomposition of ammonia.

★ 2NH₃(g) ⇌ N₂(g) + 3H₂(g)

2) Oxidation of dioxide of Sulphur to trioxide.

★ 2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌2SO₃(g)

3) Formation of hydrogen iodide from it's gaseous elements.

★ H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g)

♪ Heterogeneous Equilibrium : If the participating substances are in two or more phases, the equilibrium is said to be Heterogeneous.

Examples of Heterogeneous Equilibrium are :-

1) Thermal decomposition of lime stone in a closed vessel.

★ CaCO₃(s) ⇌CaO(s) + CO₂(g)

2) Formation of ammonium carbonate from ammonia and carbon dioxide.

★ 2NH₃(g) + CO₂(g) + H₂O(l) ⇌(NH₄)₂CO₃(s)

3) Decomposition of ammonium bisulphate in closed vessel.

★ NH₄HS(s) ⇌ NH₃(g) + H₂S(g)
