Professor of gravitation physics at Cambridge from 1977, he is confined to a wheelchair by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which also affect his speech. He has made such discoveries as that the strong gravitational field around a black hole can radiate particles of matter.Commenting on Einstein's remark: 'God doesn't play dice with the Universe,' he said: 'God not only plays dice , he throws them where where they cannot be seen .' ★
