Answer:

In a village there lived a farmer who had seven sons. These sons were humble and good to their father and highly respected his words. But, they always used to quarrel among themselves and never worked together.

The farmer was a very well known person in the village. He owned a large farm and had taken care of it all these years. It was his forefather’s property and he valued it a lot. He was respected by everyone in the village. But he was repeatedly told about his son’s erratic behaviour. This annoyed him and at the same time he was worried about them. He also observed that the neighbours and the villagers took advantage of their fights and misunderstanding that grew between them.

The farmer realised that he was growing old and could not do the tiring farm work any longer. He was growing fragile and needed help which he thought of getting from his sons. The farmer was also fed up of his sons’ quarrelling nature and knew that it would be a difficult task to get them together. So, he decided to teach them a lesson. He thought hard and finally came up with a wonderful idea.

The following day he called all his sons and requested them to sit at the table. He gave a stick to each of them the asked them to break it. The sons could not understand why their father was telling them to do this, but they did as they were told. Everyone was able to break the stick into two halves. Now, the farmer gave each of them a bundle of sticks and asked them to break it. Obviously, none of them could break or bend the bundle of sticks

The farmer tried to explain to his sons that if they worked separately without understanding each other and having constant fights, they could be easily torn apart. But, if they worked together no one could dare to break them. The farmer also explained their need to be in the farm, for which he had toiled for so many years. He told them that he was growing old and would soon die. So, he wanted them to look after the farm which fetched them their daily bread and butter.

The sons realised what their father wanted to explain to them and decided to work together and take care of their farm. Since then all the seven brothers came together and remained together for the rest of their lives. The neighbours and the whole village envied them and their farm but no one could rip them apart.
