Write structure of diamond
Answers
1.lustrous
2.colorless and clear.
3.hard
4.high melting point.
5.insoluble in water.
6.doesn't conduct electricity.
It is used in jewellery because when cut by experts,it will sparkle and reflect light in an attractive way.
diamond has a giant molecular structure.each carbon atom is covalently bonded to four other carbon atoms in diamond.
this is beacause covalent bonds are strong and diamond contains very many covalent bonds.this makes its melting and boiling point very high.
hope helps you
Answer:
Structure of diamond :
(1) Diamond has three dimensional structure.
(2) In this, carbon atom undergoes sp3-hybridisation.
(3) Each carbon atom is bonded tetrahedrally to four other carbon atoms which occupy the four corners of the tetrahedron, by overlapping of sp3-hybrid orbitals.
(4) Each of these four carbon atoms are covalently bonded to four more carbon atoms in the similar fashion and the pattern is repeated in the entire crystal lattice. These tetrahedra are linked together into a three dimensional network to form a giant molecule of diamond.
Properties of diamond :
(1) Diamond is very hard with high melting point (3873 K) and high density (3.51) (due to its structure).
(2) It is a non conductor of electricity as there are no free electrons in the crystal structure.
Uses of diamond : Diamond is used
(1) for cutting glass and in drilling tools.
(2) for making dies for drawing thin wire from metal.
(3) for making jewellery.
