Answer:

I had left New Delhi for the Himalayas. I was going as far as Bareilly by train and then by car to Ranikhet – an old British army hill station located on 6000-foot ridge opposite a 120-mile stretch of snow capped Himalayas. The train was slow; and it stopped at all the way stations. At every stop, I swung open the door of my compartment, and walked the platform.

A Girl with a Basket

By William C Douglas

A Girl with a Basket is an amazing short story written by William C Douglas, who was a rearward judge of the Supreme Court of America, that specially highlights the value of self-esteem.

During the year of 1950, when India was experiencing refugee issues, Douglas came to India. He saw a vivid number of sights ranging from  lush green jungles to small mud-houses in villages during is journey from New Delhi to Ranikhet.

Throughout the journey, the train would stop at many stations where he found villagers and others and was aroused in speaking to them. He wanted to know a lot about them - their living conditions, their social life etc. but he couldn't talk much. Douglas also mentions viewing the majestic Ganga and other sceneries which moved him a lot.

Upon reaching his destination, i.e. Ranikhet, he was surrounded by innumerable refugee children who showed him their wares which were hand-woven reed baskets and fans. Majority of the natives couldn't afford to buy them. Hence, their target customers were Americans whom they knew would buy things from them. Douglas bought a few fans and baskets from the children and was about to leave when he noticed a beautiful nine year old girl who was persuading him to buy a beautiful basket from her. Her pleading eyes made the author feel pity for her but he did not want to buy the basket.

So, the author kept a handful of money into her basket but the girl graciously gave back the money. This act made the author understand the self-respect the girl had and he was forced to buy the basket from her.

Wherever he went in India, he always saw a tint of self-respect and pride in their own self with a broad mind of accepting and enjoying freedom. The charming nine year old girl who went happily after he bought the basket was the best example who showed these feeling with unmixed emotions.
