Poem “On His Blindness” is a life story sonnet in which Milton meditates on his own lack of sight. For most of his life, he had been able to see perfectly, however his late-night studying and writing on behalf of the government of the short-lived English Republic, in which he held a very outstanding position, helped damage his eyes . This sonnet — written in the “Petrarchan” rhyme scheme related to the fourteenth-century Italian .The sonnet is therefore a normal Petrarchan sonnet in form, however in problem matter, the poem departs from the topics usually related to Petrarchan poems. Petrarch changed into most famous for writing about love; John Milton departs from that traditional topic to address a very practical, very physical problem, but a problem with many broader religious implications.

On his blindness
On His Blindness is one of the best known of the sonnets of John Milton.(A sonnet consists of fourteen lines divided into an eight-line unit known as an octave, and a six-line unit known as a sestet. The octave and sestet can together form a single stanza or appear as two separate stanzas. Since the fourteen lines of this sonnet are not divided into stanzas, they are divided into meaningful segments for the purposes of this summary in order to make the poem easier to follow and understand.) It was first published in 1673.This is an autobiographical sonnet in which he expresses his feelings as a blind person. The poem has a number of Biblical references that depict Milton’s stern belief in God. It is written in the Petrarchan rhyme scheme.
He expresses his doubt to himself and also finds his solace within himself. In the begining he was worried that going blind will prevent him from composing great poetry, but he then learnt to accept God’s will without questioning his intention.
The poet says that his eyes are filled with darkness even before he explored and only half of his life is over.He believes,God has given him the talent of poetic composition, and if he is not able to produce something worthwhile using that talent, then he deserves to die. He directly asks God a question, whether he would be cruel enough to expect something high-yielding from a blind man as the price for providing him with the talent that has helped him earn his bread and butter thus far. He learnt from his patience that God does not ask for anything from a man.
God is akin to a king who has many kingdoms under his dominion and countless subjects to do as he asks. There are similarly thousand of angels who are always active to carry God's order.
The only service to God is to accept whatever trial God puts on their path and to deal with such trials with courage and resilience. Serve God to the best of their ability, and God loves everyone equally.
In the end, he is assured that he serves God like the angels who just wait for the orders of God.God in the best way possible, only accept the hand they have been dealt gracefully and without any bitterness.
