The cations are the positively charged metallic ions and the anions are the negatively charged non metallic ions. The symbols of 'cation' and 'anion' present in MgO is  (cation) and  (anion).

Ionic compounds have a high melting point. This is because, ionic compounds are held together by 'ionic bond' or electrovalent bond. The ionic bonds have a strong 'ionic force of attraction' that holds the 'cations and anions' together strongly. This is why ionic compounds have a high melting point.
