A camel is an even-toed ungulate in the genus Camelus that bears distinctive fatty deposits known as "humps" on its back. Camels have long been domesticated and, as livestock, they provide food and textiles.

Camels can survive for long periods of time without food or water. They can easily carry an extra 200 pounds and can walk about 20 miles a day through the harsh desert climate. Camels also provide humans with food (milk and meat) and textiles (fiber and felt from hair).

Domesticated dromedary camels are found throughout desert areas in North Africa and the Middle East. A feral population of dromedary camels lives in Australia. The camels were imported in the 19th century as pack animals and were used to cross the vast desert regions there.

The camel is used for several purposes for which its role is essential. It is used as a beast of burden for transporting goods and people as well as for providing milk. Milk is often the only regular food source for its owners. The camel's meat, wool and leather are also widely utilized.

They actually can sleep standing up, which helps keep them safe from predators. They sleep about six hours per night, and can withstand major temperature changes from the sweltering heat of the day to the cold desert nights. Wild camels roam for food at night and rest during the hot day.

Camels walk in a rocking motion known as “pacing,” in which the front and back legs on the same side move forward at the same time. Camels are well adapted to life in hot, dry climates.
