Compounds with a phenol group will form a blue, violet, purple, green, or red-brown color upon addition of aqueous ferric chloride. This reaction can be used as a test for phenol groups. To Conduct Demonstration: Mix several drops or a few crystals of compound to be tested in a beaker or in a 200mm test tube.

Test for identification:

Phenol on reaction with Bromine water, decolourises bromine water and gives white precipitate due to the formation of 2,4,6-tribromophenol

C₆H₅OH + 3Br₂ → C₆H₃Br₃O+ 3HBr

Test for confirmation:

Phenol on reaction with FeCl₃ (red) gives a violet coloured complex

C₆H₅OH + FeCl₃ → [Fe(OC₆H₅)₆]³⁻ + 3H⁺ + 3Cl⁻

For reference: Phenol looks like a pale yellow-reddish yellow thick fluid
