The varying stances of the British government, the reduction of allowances, racial discrimination and harsh punishments contributed to a feeling of discontent among sepoys which ultimately led to the revolt of 1857....

The sepoys were paid much less than the British soldiers. They were also treated unfairly by the British officers.

All high posts in the army were reserved for the British.

The sepoys were not allowed to wear caste and religion.....

  • The Indians sepoy comprised a major chunk of the British army. But they had various grievances against the British. Indians were considered inferior by the British and Hence, were paid less than their European counter parts. They were often humiliated by their British officers.
  • The chances of promotion of Indians in the army we're also very limited. They could not rise beyond the level of a subedar.
  • It became mandatory for new recruits to serve overseas by the General Service Enlistment Act (1856). But according to the Hindu norms, traveling overseas was a care taboo.
  • The soldiers were earlier given overseas allowance or Bhatta to fight wars outside India. However, this policy was later discontinued.
  • The British had forbidden sectarian marks such as tilak, turban or beard, which hurt the religious sentiments of the Indians.
  • The Bengal regiment, which joined the revolt, constituted mostly of the high caste communities of Awadh, who were deeply antagonised by the British annexation of Awadh.
