1) take a wide mouthed glass bottle. fix it on a stand in the inverted position.
2) a rubber cork having two holes is fitted in the neck of the bottle two carbons rods are fixed in the two holes of the cork tightly
3) fill the glass bottle two third with. add a few drops of dilute sulphuric acid to water
4) two similar test tubes filled with water are carefully inverted over the two carbon electrodes by keeping thumb over their mouth so that initially they remained completly filled with water
5) connect the outer end of carbon rods to the two terminal +& - of a volt battery by wires having a switch in them.
6) pass in electric current through water by turning on the switch and leave the apparatus undisturbed for some time
7) we will see the bubbles of glass being formed at both the carbon rods inside the test tubes containing water these gases are formed by the decomposition of water on passing electricity
8) the gases formed at two electrodes go on collecting in the top parts of the inverted test tubes
9) the volume of gas collected on the negative electrodes left electrode is double the volume of gas collected on the positive electrode
10 the gase collected on the left test tube is hydrogen and right test tube is oxgen. the left test tube has double volume that right test tube.
