write the application of exponents to express numbers in standard form and comparing very large and very small number ( Exponents and power)
Answers
To express small numbers in standard form
Very large numbers can be expressed in standard form using positive exponents.
Very small numbers can be expressed in standard form using negative exponents.
To compare very large and very small numbers
Using exponents we can say
The diameter of the Sun is 1.4 × 10^9 m
The diameter of the Earth is 1.2756 × 10^7 m.
Comparing the diameter of the Earth, with the diameter of the Sun
1.4×10^9/1.2756×10^7
= 1.4×10^9−7/1.2756
= 1.4×100/1.2756 = approx.100
We can say that the diameter of the sun is 100 times the diameter of the earth
Hence very large and very small numbers can be represented in the standard form or scientific form as m x 10^n, where m is a decimal number greater than or equal to 1 but less than 10, n is an integer
