Phosphorus pentachoride or PCl5 is a colourless, sensitive to water and moisture solid. It is obtained by not only burning phosphorus in chlorine but also by chlorination of PCl3.

The balanced formula of phosphorus burns in chlorine gas to form phosphorus pentachloride:

4P4 + 10Cl2 -> 4PCl5
