Answer:
(a) Alkyl alcohol is treated with Hydrogen chloride:
R-OH + HCl → R-Cl + H2O
Mainly tertiary alcohols are converted to alkyl chlorides rapidly using concentrated hydrochloric acid whereas, primary and secondary alcohols take a lot of time for conversion.
R = (Mainly) Tertiary alcohols
Example: C(CH3)3-OH + HCl → C(CH3)3-Cl + H2O
(b) Alkyl alcohol is treated with Phosphorous chloride:
3R-OH + PCl3 → 3R-Cl + H3PO3
This reaction procedure gives best yields for primary and secondary alcohols.
R = (Mainly) Primary & Secondary alcohols
Example: 3CH3CH2CH2-OH + PCl3 → 3CH3CH2CH2-Cl + H3PO3
