(a) Alkyl alcohol is treated with Hydrogen chloride:

R-OH + HCl  →  R-Cl + H2O

Mainly tertiary alcohols are converted to alkyl chlorides rapidly using concentrated hydrochloric acid whereas, primary and secondary alcohols take a lot of time for conversion.

R = (Mainly) Tertiary alcohols

Example: C(CH3)3-OH + HCl  →  C(CH3)3-Cl + H2O

(b) Alkyl alcohol is treated with Phosphorous chloride:

3R-OH + PCl3  →  3R-Cl + H3PO3

This reaction procedure gives best yields for primary and secondary alcohols.

R = (Mainly) Primary & Secondary alcohols

Example: 3CH3CH2CH2-OH + PCl3  →  3CH3CH2CH2-Cl + H3PO3
