  • Mahatama Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat.
  • He was known as the ‘Father of the Nation'.
  • His original name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
  • His mother, Putlibai, was a very religious lady and used to tell him stories from the scriptures and mythology.
  • Little Gandhi grew up to be an honest and a decent student.
  • At the age of 13, he was married to Kasturba.
  • At age of 19, he was sent to England to study Law.
  • In 1893, he went to South Africa. There he fought against injustice.
  • Gandhiji could not tolerate the oppression of the Indians by the whites. So he stayed there and fought through peaceful, non-violent methods.
  • In 1914, Gandhiji returned to India.
  • He travelled throughout the country. He fought against the Britishers through peaceful methods.
  • His policies forced the Britishers to leave the country.
  • On 30th January 1948, he was shot dead by a communalist named Nathuram Vianyak Godse.  : (
