In the autobiography, "The birth of khadi" by Gandhi, the reason behind the creation of khadi was the sole purpose of looking out for ways through which the poverty of the Indians in the 1900's could be solved.

Gandhi described that he had never seen a handloom or a spinning wheel in 1908 and he wanted to come up with any possible way to remove poverty issues from India, for any of those ways out would be established Swaraj. He further described that even in 1915, he still hadn't seen any spinning wheel. After founding the Styagraha Ashram, Gandhi introduced a few hand looms. This was followed by the struggle of looking for a weaving expert to teach the people over there. This kept on going until, a weaver was found, the skill of weaving was learnt and the ability to clothe ones-self was possible. Gandhi didn't want that foreign yarn should be used and instead Indian yarn should be used.
