The cause of Balkan war are as follows:)

1. A large part of Balkan area was under the control of the ottoman empire while some parts was under control of the austria and Russia. This caused a complex problem.

2. The spread of idea of romantic nationalism in balkans together with a disintegration of ottoman empire made region very explosive.

3. Balkan people struggled to identify their identity and rights

4. Balkans became a scene of big power rivalry and military, which culminated war

5.balkan states were fiercely jealous of each other and and each hoped to gain more territory with expense of others

Yugoslavia experienced a modest economic ‘boom’ in the 60s and 70s mostly due to massive loans, mostly from western banks, to the tune of almost 20 billion dollars by the late 70s which is a significant increase from 400 million in the 50s. The economy was not prepared for the reality of having to pay back the banks starting with the death of Tito and into the 80s. A weakening economy allowed for more ‘blame’ to be tossed around and a lot of the blame was rooted in nationalist sentiment i.e. X group screwed over Y group, etc.

Unresolved nationalist questions: Scores were never totally ‘settled’ since WW2, The drawing up of SFR Yugoslavia’s republican borders only added more potential controversy. The most obvious ‘flashpoint’ was Kosovo which was granted an autonomous status within Serbia which temporarily pleased the Albanian population but upset the Serb population.

Failing of international communism in Europe: With the failing and eventually failed Soviet Union there was no “champion” superpower to challenge the West. Free elections and democracy spread like wild fire to all the communist states of Europe and Yugoslavia was no exception.
