sepoy mutiny was also known as Indian rebellion of 1857 for the great uprising of 1857

The causes for the great uprising of 1857 are:

  1. Discontent among the ruling families :
  • British policies such as subsidiary Alliance, Doctrine of Lapse,etc. angered many of the Indian rulers and shapes as they lost their power and Honour.
  • the court proceedings where monitored by Resident due to which the freedom of the rulers was controlled.
  • the British did not recognise the claim of adopted son as a heir of the kingdom.
  • the dethronement of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah infuriated the company's sepoys as most of them came from Awadh . Wajid Ali Shah was dethroned on the the grounds of mis -government.
  • Lord Dalhousie declared that after the death of Mughal ruler Bahadur Shah Zafar his family would be shifted from the residence of the Red Fort and he would be the last ruler of the Mughal empire and after his death his descendants would no longer be recognised as Kings instead there would be just princes.
