After over 150 years of British Rule, everything in India had been effected by British Industry, commerce and government, including clothing.

When the British took over, India was one of the world's largest exports of textiles but very quickly, the opposite had become true and India was the largest importer of textiles and 99% of that came from the British cities of Manchester, Sheffield and Birmingham.
Hence the materials used e.g. cotton and wool were of a certain type and soon everyone in India was using them

By 1947, when the country became independent it soon developed it's own indigenous industry which began to quickly shift the country's taste in textile materials, designs and fashion e.g. using more of Silk in sarees, more of Karachi cotton as opposed to British cotton and more vibrant colours
