When Anne Mansfield Sullivan went to teach Helen in March 1887, She was only 20 years old and a recent graduate of the Perkins institution of the blind.
Miss Sullivan had a deep psychological insight in Helen's mind. Even when Helen locked her up or smashed her doll she handled the situation very calmly. A dedicated teacher, she taught Helen the manual alphabet, Braille and a wide range of subjects. Thus her love and preserverance helped her to establish her identity and become self-reliant, rather than being a burden on her family and society.
This Self-effacing great women never tried to impress upon people around her that she was doing a great job by making a disabled child self reliant. She worked as a sculptor chiselling this little mass of personality, stroke by stroke. to form her perfect figure.
Thus she was rightly the SPIRITUAL LIBERATOR of Helen.
