Evelyn Elizabeth Ann Glennie (born 1965) is an acclaimed percussionist from Aberdeenshire in Scotland. Since the age of 11, she has been totally deaf. She is supposed to have taught herself, how to register sounds using other parts of her body. She mostly plays barefoot at her concerts to ‘feel’ the music better.

She studied at Ellon Academy and the Royal Academy of Music. She had the honour of performing for the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games of 2012.

Evelyn Glennie was a determined and hardworking girl and her character is quite inspiring. She lost her hearing disability owing to some gradual auditory nerve damage at quite a young age. However, she did not give up. Her passion for music became her driving force and helped her to put aside her disability. Ron Forbes, a percussionist spotted her potential. He asked her not to listen through ears but to try to sense it some other way. She realised she could feel the higher drum from the west up and the lower one from the west down. Ron Forbes repeated the exercise and soon availing discovered that she could send certain notes in different parts of her body and mind to sounds and vibrations. She scored the highest marks in the history of Royal Academy of Music and captured most of the top awards. She became the world’s most sought after multi-percussionist with a mastery of some thousand instruments. She also learnt French and mastered basic Japanese. In 1991 she achieved the Royal Philharmonic Society’s prestigious Soloist of the year Award. She also performs charity shows in prisons and hospitals and gives classes to young musicians.
