The narrator of the story is a novelist who is shown to be writing a novel in the beginning of the story. He bears with her daughter's chats all the time and does not mind her playing under his table even while he is busy writing.
It is he who tries drive away the fear of Kabuliwala from Mini's mind and unlike Mini's mother, does not believe the fact that Afghans are mostly criminals, which helps in the development of friendship between Kabuliwala and Mini.
The greatness of the narrator becomes even more noticeable when we see him at the end of the story because he waited till the right moment to get his daughter married, instead of doing it at an early age. Moreover, when he hears the story of Kabuliwala, he hands him some money so that he could meet his daughter in Afghanistan. The money given was from the budget of Mini's marriage, due to which, he had to make some adjustments, but he is happy as he feels that Mini's marriage will be much brighter by the fact that a father would be able to meet his only daughter after a long time.
