- The loggers and shepherds successively believed during a ruler of nature, a protector of forests and mountain pastures, or the primitive person of the Woods of medieval legends. this might have gone to call down the figure of a mountain spirit, an ancient creature who guarded subterranean kingdoms and mountain passes.
- The mountain spirit had many names and assumed many shapes: he most frequently appeared as an old man, a monk or giant, but could also turn out to be a handsome knight.
