Answer :
This question is based on the short story 'The Thief's story' by Ruskin Bond.
The Thief/Hari Singh
Hari Singh was an intelligent fifteen-year-old boy. He was a thief and conman who always lived alone and took on a new name every month to escape from the police and his former employers. He was quite successful at stealing money and robbing people. He befriended people with the sole purpose of taking advantage of them and robbing them of their money. He did not keep any friends as he did not want anybody to know about his secrets and whereabouts. He had a good judgement about human character. He underwent a transformation after he met Anil who trusted him blindly. He stole Anil's money but his conscience did not let him run away with it and so, he kept it back. He wanted to learn to read and write and change the track of his life by becoming a really big, clever and respected man.
Anil
Anil was an easy-going, kind and simple young man who wrote for magazines. He lived alone in a room over the Jumna Sweet Shop. He did not make money regularly but received irregular payments through cheques. He was a tall and lean fellow. He was interested in sports like wrestling as he met Hari Singh for the first time at a wrestling match. He was a kind, understanding, loving, affectionate, sympathizing and caring person. Even though he could not pay Hari Singh, he decided to keep him as a cook and provide him food and shelter as he was moved by his emotional appeal of working for him. He did not have the heart to refuse him. He taught Anil to write his name and promised to teach him to write whole sentences and to add numbers. He was aware of the fact that Hari Singh kept some money from the household expenses but he chose to ignore it. He forgave Anil for stealing his money and did not scold him but chose to pay him a regular salary.
