Arrival of Iqbal
One day, a new child named Iqbal arrives at the factory. He is different from the other children in a variety of ways, including that he takes a bolder stand with Hussain Khan, and he appears to be a particularly hard worker and a talented carpet weaver. Iqbal begins to make the other children question their agreement with Hussain Khan. He tells them that they will never be free regardless of how hard they work.
Many of the children deny this truth and grow resentful of Iqbal for telling them. Karim, a 17-year old, particularly resents Iqbal for saying such things, since he has been working for Hussain Khan for most of his life and is responsible for managing the younger children. Iqbal's claims make him question his role under Hussain Khan. Fatima, unlike many of the other children, respects Iqbal's attitude and becomes friends with him. Throughout the book, Iqbal inspires Fatima with stories about the outside and promises her that one day they will fly a kite together.
Iqbal's first major act of resistance comes one morning when important buyers are coming to purchase a carpet. Hussain Khan has Iqbal prepare a carpet known as a Blue Bakhara, which, due to the difficulty in making it, can sell for a lot of money. Just before the buyers arrive, Iqbal takes scissors and cuts the carpet into several pieces. Hussain Khan is very angry, and puts Iqbal in the Tomb, where children are sent for solitary confinement when they are disobedient.
