Answer:

Immediately described as “very self-possessed,” Vera is an observant, clever, and above all imaginative young woman who handily fools the adults around her with “romance on short notice.” Vera’s name comes from the Latin for truth, and her innocent demeanor makes her tales all the more convincing.

Vera is confident, smart, imaginative and fun-loving.

Vera, Mrs. Sappleton’s niece is described as a ‘very self-possessed lady’, meaning she is confident and well able to deal with strangers. Also, she carries herself well, since the author uses the word ‘lady’ for her. Yet, when the author wants to portray her innocence, he calls her a ‘child’.

Vera is extremely imaginative. She quickly made up a story about her aunt’s family. Also, when Mr. Nuttel runs away, Vera is quick to concoct a story about his experience in India.

Additionally, she is a great storyteller. While narrating the story of Mrs. Sappleton's husband to Mr. Nuttel, she manipulates her voice and makes it 'falteringly human' for maximum effect. In fact, when Mrs. Sappleton comes, Mr. Nuttel is almost relieved because Vera’s story has already had such a deep effect on him.

The girl also has brilliant acting skills. She uses her gestures to convey a lot. For example, when the hunting party arrives, Vera looks through the window with a ‘dazed horror in her eyes’. She even gives a convincing ‘shudder’.

Put together, as the author states, ‘Romance at short notice was her specialty’, meaning her specialty lies in creating thrilling situations.
