Antonio is a wealthy merchant . He is a royal merchant, successful businessman and a popular and respected figure in Venice , owning a fleet of ships . In the play, he is unquestionably the hero around whom the interest in the story revolves .

Antonio is a model christian as defined by Elizabeth society . He represents among other things the ideal of nobility in friendship . He enters into his business with a high moral security unlike other average traders . He is not selfish , unimaginative or pompous . All the merchants of Venice show respect to him for these qualities in him . We hear , that in his crisis twenty merchants and magnificoes pleaded with Shylock on his behalf . He is one of the most generous souls in Italy . He lends money money without interest to people in their however our of need .

Antonio is peerless as a friend . He loves Bassanio dearly and is ready to do anything for him in order to help Bassanio . Antonio is a generous person although a wealthy merchant , he is careless about his money . Antonio though a perfect gentleman , a good friend and noble heart yet he lacks dynamics , which one expects in the hero of the play. He is insolence to the Jew and his is complacency about his financial position causes downfall for which he suffers . He lends money to people without charging interest and saves them from Shylock and his high rates of interest .

PORTIA :

Portia is the heroine of the play . She is also the pivot of the play . She is the most attractive character with immense intellectual capacity , wit , generosity , liveliness and ideal virtues . Her character is of uniform excellence full of sweetness and grace . Portia has a pretty wit and sharp tongue . She deals with her various and unwelcome suitors with profound wit which also displays a shrewd intellect . . She also has a good sense of humour .

She combines high intellectual power with her beauty . Her comments and criticisms of the suitors show her insight into human character . The brilliance of intelligence comes out when she completely out wits , Shylock in the trial scene . Her sense of humour can be seen in a clever analysis of the national traits of her suitor . Portia has great determination , courage , self-reliance and sharp intelligence, self-confidence impels her to go and defend Antonio in the court against Shylock. This shows a quick sense of decision making readiness of mind , her firmness and self confidence .

SHYLOCK :

Sherlock is the most impressive character in the Play . He is the villain of the play . Shylock is a typical Jew of the elizabethan times . To him his own race is always a sacred Nation . He is a middle aged man who has a keeness of observation, a memory for details andstrong amount of energy . Shylock is a money lender who charges interest at high rates , which is only means of livelihood . When is daughter, Jessica, flies away with his ducats and jewels he becomes fronted . Sherlock bears hate towards Antonio , which is bitter and terrible . He is quite straightforward and does not conceal his feelings . Shylock's cunning is fully visible in his dealings with Antonio . By nature Shlock hats all Christians and particularly Antonio from the core of his heart . He wants to take revenge from Antonio both for personal as well as racial and religious means . He is a man of clean and clear intellect and a man of uncommon strength of character . There is none in the play who can out wit him but he is outwitted my Portia in the trial scene only by legal quibble. His instructions in his dealing with Antonio and his knowledge of the Venetian law . He is determined individual .

Shylock's personality lies in his intelligence , his shrewdness and his his courage and determination . His strength of personality also lies in his aggressive nature in his singleness of purpose in life and tenacity to whatever he undertakes to do.
