Collenchyma cells are elongated cells with irregularly thick cell walls that provide support and structure. Their thick cell walls are composed of the compounds cellulose and pectin. These cells are often found under the epidermis, or the outer layer of cells in young stems and in leaf veins.

  1. Collenchyma is a simple permanent plant tissue.
  2. There basic function is to give flexibility to the plant.
  3. It is a living cell and have cellulose at it's ends.
  4. It have little intercellular spaces.
  5. They have thin cell walls but are thick at the end.
  6. They have axially elongated cells.
  7. They contain sometime chloroplast.
  8. They have bacteria deposit and living protoplasts.
