Characteristics of

Acids:

1. They are sour in taste.

2. Acids turn blue litmus paper to red.

3. Acid solutions have pH value less than 7 on pH scale.

4. They are soluble in water.

5. Acids are corrosive in nature.

6. When acids are dissolved in water, they produces hydrogen ions [H+] ions.

Or, It release hydrogen ions in aqueous solution.

7. In Aqueous solution Acid conducts electricity because, in water it disassociates to give hydrogen ions [H+ ] ions. And current is carried out by movement of these ions. These ions are free to carry charge.

8. Acids react with reactive metals to give salt and hydrogen gas.

9. Acids react with base to give salt and water. This is also called neutralisation reaction.

10.Acids react with metal carbonates to form salt , carbon dioxide and water.

Bases:

1. They are bitter in taste.

2. Bases are soapy or slippery in touch.

3. They turn red litmus paper to blue.

4. Alkalis or base have pH value greater than 7 on pH scale.

5. Many bases are insoluble in water but if a base is soluble in water, it is called an alkali. The alkali hydroxide metals arr the bases that easily dissolve in water.

6. Bases are corrosive to skin. Strong bases are corrosive in nature but all bases are not corrosive.

7. They release hydroxide ions [OH-] in aqueous solution.

8. Bases conduct electricity in aqueous solution because it dissociates to give ions which help in conduction of electricity.

9. When alkali react with metals it gives metal salt and hydrogen gas.

10. They also carry out neutralisation reaction. Alkali (base) react with acid to give salt and hydrogen gas.

11. They do not react with metal carbonates as the metal carbonates are bases itself.

Salts:

1. Salts are generally soluble in water.

2. Salts are generally found as crystals with water molecules in them. These water molecules are called water of crystallization. And these type of salts are called hydrated salts.

3. A salt can be either alkaline(basic) or acidic or nuetral. If a strong base react with weak acid, it will give a basic salt.

If a strong acid react with weak base, it will give an acidic salt.

If both acid and base are strong, then the salt will be neutral.

4. Salt water is a good conductor of electricity.

5. They are brittle and hard crystalline solids.

6. They have both positively charged ions and negatively charged ions. Thus, they are ionic compound.

Hence, they are iconic in nature as ions are present in them.
