Alluvial soil:-
- Alluvial soil is the most fertile soil.
- It it is most widely spread and most important soil in India.
- It has been deposited by three important Himalayan River systems called Indus River system, Ganga River system and Brahmaputra River system.
- The Northern plains are mainly made up of this soil.
- It has also been extended in Rajasthan and Gujarat by a narrow corridor.
- It is also find and eastern coastal plains particularly in the river deltas.
- It is formed by the deposit of sand and silt and consists of various proportion of clay too.
- It is coarse near the piedmont region.
- On the basis of size of the grains, we can classify alluvial soil into three types: Duars (big particles), Chos (medium) and terai (marshy land).
- Also, on the basis of the age of the soil we can classified into two types: Old Alluvial (Bangar)(It has high concentration of kankar nodules) and New Alluvial (Khadar)(It has fine particles and is more fertile than the other one).
- The Alluvial soil is rich in phosphoric acid, potash and lime.
- It is deficient in nitrogen.
- Because of it's fertility the plains are densely populated and intensively cultivated
