Characteristics of plasma membrane are:

1. The plasma membrane is the outermost layer of covering present around cells and all internal organelles of the cell whose function is the protection of the cell and its organelles.
2. It is a double-layered membrane with phospholipid composition and hence, is also called the phospholipid bilayer.
3. It is a boundary layer that allows only selected substances to enter and exit the cell and its organelles, therefore they are referred to as selectively permeable membrane.
4. Since, it monitors the exit and entry of substances, it acts as a connection between the cell and its surrounding environment.
5. The thickness of this layer ranges from 5nm to 8nm and is composed of phospholipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and some other conjugated molecules.
