Brutus is known as a tragic hero in the play Julius Caesar because he faces a major conflict between his loyalty to his friend and his loyalty to his country.
Although Brutus' relationship with Caesar is strong, his relationship with the people of Rome is stronger.
In the final scene, Mark Antony describes Brutus as "the noblest Roman of them all", for he was the only conspirator who acted for the good of Rome.
The Tragic Hero. This tells us that Brutus truly made the ultimate sacrifice of killing his friend for the greater good of Rome.
Cassius deceives Brutus by making him believe the citizens of Rome are begging him to protect their freedom.
When Brutus does join the conspiracy, he does so believing that their cause is noble.
He is a hero because he killed Caesar for the greater good of Rome, and he is tragic hero because in the end he is killed over the guilt of it.
