- Protonation of alkene to form a stable carbocation by electrophillic attack of H3O+.
Step 2 -
- Nucleophillic attack of water on carbocation.
Step 3 -
- Deprotonation to form an alcohol.
Note -
- In case of unsymmetrical Alkene, the addition of water takes place in accordance with Markovnikov's rule. This rules states that the negative part (OH-) parts gets attached to that carbon atom which possess lesser number of hydrogen atoms.
