White washing of walls uses CaO (Calcium Oxide {Quick Lime} ) along with water. The reaction is so exothermic that the water begins to boil and it forms Ca(OH)2 { Slaked lime} which is painted on walls.
CaO + H2O ------------> Ca(OH)2 + heat
After a few days this slaked lime reacts with the CO2 present in the air to give a shine looking appearance to the walls. The compound formed is Calcium Hydrogen Carbonate {Ca(HCO3)2}
Ca(OH)2 + 2CO2 -------------> Ca(HCO3)2
