For white washing Calcium Hydroxide is used. It is applied on the walls and in a few days,it reacts with the carbondioxide present in the air and forms Calcium Carbonate(CaCO3) which is quite white and gives a shiny appearance to the walls.
CaOH+Co2--- CaCO3+H2O
For black amd white photography, silver bromide or silver chloride are used.
