When ethanol is heated with alkaline solution of potassium permanganate , it will form ethanoic acid . The reaction is :
C2H5OH −→−−−[O]KMnO4 CH3COOH

Two physical properties of ethanol :
1) Ethanol is a colourless liquid having a pleasant smell and a burning taste .
2) It is miscible with water in all proportions .

Two uses of ethanol :
1) It is used in the manufacture of ethanal, (i.e. acetaldehyde), and ethanoic acid, (i.e. acetic acid),
2) Used in the manufacture of paints, varnishes, lacquers and medicines .

This is an oxidizing reaction.

When ethanol reacts with acidified potassium dichromate it gives ethanoic acid as the product.

C2H6O+K2Cr2O7→CH3COOH

Here potassium dichromate is the oxidizing agent.

Physical properties of ethanol:-

1]At room temperature, ethanol is a clear, volatile liquid with a characteristic odor. When diluted, it is somewhat sweet, but concentrated alcohol has a strong, burning taste.

2]Ethanol is highly soluble in water and organic solvents, but poorly soluble in fats and oils.

Uses of ethanol:-

1]Ethanol is a common ingredient in many cosmetics and beauty products.

2]As a food additive, ethanol can help evenly distribute food coloring, as well as enhance the flavor of food extracts.
