Answer:

Washing soda can be obtained by heating baking soda. On heating, baking soda gives sodium carbonate, carbon dioxide and water. Consequently, the recrystallisation of sodium carbonate gives washing soda. The chemical equations involved in the process are: Washing soda is used in glass, soap and paper industries.

Answer :

a. The chemical formula of washing soda is \rm{Na_2CO_3.10H_2O}

\hrulefill

b. Baking soda \rm{(NaHCO_3)} is strongly heated in air to form soda ash (sodium carbonate).

  • \rm{2NaHCO_3(s)\xrightarrow{\text{heat}}\underset{\text{Soda ash}}{Na_2CO_3}+H_2O(l)+CO_2(g)}

The soda ash is dissolved in boiling hot water so as to obtain its saturated solution. The saturated solution so obtained is allowed to cool, when washing sods crystals separate out. This process is called recrystallisation.

  • \rm{Na_2CO_3+10H_2O\longrightarrow{}\underset{\text{Washing soda}}{Na_2CO_3.10H_2O}}

\hrulefill

c. Washing soda is used in the manufacture of glass.

Some other uses :-

  • Washing soda is also used in the manufacture of soap.
  • It is used in paper industries.
