Caustic soda:
- Chemical name- Sodium Hydroxide
- Chemical formula- NaOH
Caustic soda is a white, crystalline, odorless solid with the chemical formula CAS1310-73-2. It is a highly caustic base and alkali that decomposes proteins at ambient temperatures and can cause severe chemical burns to exposed skin.
Preparation of caustic soda:
- Sodium hydroxide is industrially produced as a 50% solution by variations of the electrolytic chloralkali process. Chlorine gas is also produced in this process.
- Solid sodium hydroxide is obtained from this solution by the evaporation of water. Solid sodium hydroxide is most commonly sold as flakes, prills, and cast blocks.
- Sodium hydroxide was produced by treating sodium carbonate with calcium hydroxide in a metathesis reaction which takes advantage of the fact that sodium hydroxide is soluble, while calcium carbonate is not. This process was called causticizing.
Ca(OH)2 + Na2CO3 → CaCO3 + 2Na
- Sodium hydroxide is also produced by combining pure sodium metal with water, the byproducts are hydrogen and heat.
2Na +2H2O→ 2NaOH + H2
- This reaction is commonly used for demonstrating the reactivity of alkali metals. It is not commercially viable, as the isolation of sodium metal is typically performed by reduction or electrolysis of sodium compounds including sodium hydroxide.
Uses:
- It is used as a cleaning agent and in the manufacturing of washing soda.
- Sometimes, sodium hydroxide is also used as a reagent in laboratories.
- It is used in the preparation of soda-lime and extraction of aluminum by purified bauxite.
