Write the chemical properties of base with metal and non-metallic
oxides. Give two-two balanced equations each.
Answers
Explanation:
Reaction with Bases:
(a) For Metals:
Most of the metals do not react with bases. Only a few metals such as zinc, aluminium and lead can react
with strong bases.
Generally, reactions of metals with bases releases hydrogen gas, like in case of many metals they react
with sodium hydroxide to produce hydrogen gas.
Base+ metal → salt + hydrogen
2NaOH(aq) +Zn(s) →Na2ZnO2(aq) +H2(g)
sodium zinc sodium hydrogen
hydroxide zincate gas
When zinc reacts with aqueous sodium hydroxide it gives sodium zincate and hydrogen gas.
(b) For Non-metals:
Generally, reactions of non-metals with bases are complex.
E.g. When chlorine reacts with a base like sodium hydroxide, it gives multiple products like sodium
hypochlorite, sodium chloride and water.
Basic Oxides of Metals
Some metallic oxides get dissolved in water and form alkalis. Their aqueous solution turns red litmus
blue.
Na2O(s) + H2O(l) → 2NaOH(aq)
Sodium water sodium
Oxide hydroxide
K2O(s)+ H2O(l) → 2KOH(aq)
